Meet Shayna Fichter and Samantha Bormate

Two University of Saskatchewan students spent the summer helping the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition connect with the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Shayna Fichter, heading into her fourth year of the BSc Nutrition program, and Samantha Bormate, a second-year Biomedical Science student, were hired to develop outreach materials aimed at high school students curious about pharmacy and nutrition careers.

For Shayna, her passion for nutrition began early when her mom encouraged her to try new foods and spices. Later, she shadowed a dietitian and took Nutrition 120, which confirmed her interest in understanding the science behind food and health. Samantha has long been drawn to healthcare and is particularly intrigued by pharmacy. “I’ve always loved chemistry and biochemistry and learning how medications work in the body,” she said. “At the same time, I value a career where I can make a meaningful impact on someone’s health and well-being.”

Under the guidance of Dr. Jane Alcorn, Kristen Vandenameele and Brianna Groot, Shayna and Samantha created a series of short social media videos featuring students and faculty. These casual, informative clips answer common questions prospective students may have and give a first-hand look at what it’s like to study and work in the college.

They also designed a roadmap-style infographic outlining recommended high school courses, university prerequisites, and steps to apply. The visual guide explains the roles of dietitians and pharmacists, highlights their importance on healthcare teams, and showcases what makes USask unique. A presentation was also developed for current students to use when talking to prospective applicants, helping spread the word about opportunities in the college.

“We wanted the content to feel relatable and informative,” said Bormate. “The videos show what it’s like to study here and give students a first look at the people they could one day work alongside.” Fichter added, “The roadmap is designed to make the path clearer while also highlighting the supportive community and hands-on learning opportunities here at USask.”

Both students said working on campus over the summer gave them a new appreciation for the university. “The campus is so beautiful in warm weather, and it’s been such a peaceful place to work,” said Bormate. Fichter agreed, adding that the college’s smaller class sizes, close-knit community, and supportive professors have been instrumental in her success.

Looking ahead, both students have ambitious goals. Shayna hopes to explore different areas of dietetics during her upcoming placements, with interests ranging from pediatrics and prenatal care to mental health and entrepreneurship. She is also open to graduate studies or even returning to work at the university one day. Samantha plans to continue her education, either through pharmacy or another healthcare field, and is eager to build a career focused on patient care and making a positive impact.

They hope their outreach work will help more high school students discover the diverse and rewarding career paths available in pharmacy and nutrition—and see themselves as future healthcare professionals.
