About the Labs

The Food and Nutrition Lab is a 3000 sq foot space that contains a food preparation lab as well as separate dry and cold storage, student change rooms and classroom space. The food preparation lab consists of 12 work benches each housing a 6 burner electric commercial oven, sink and ample stainless steel work space.

The Food Research Lab is a fully-equipped food preparation space dedicated to food and nutrition-related research and development. It also includes dry and cold storage and an adjoining meeting room area, which can be used for team meetings or interactions with research participants.

Booking Information

The Food Research Lab, located in 2B58 of the Health Sciences Building, is an R&D facility available to researchers and their partners.

The Food and Nutrition Lab, located in 2B64, serves a broader range of users. Access is prioritized as follows:

  1. Undergraduate nutrition courses
  2. College of Pharmacy and Nutrition activities, including collaborations with partners like the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
  3. University of Saskatchewan entities and USSU-ratified student groups conducting academic or extracurricular activities.
  4. External organizations (subject to approval and facility rental policies - contact us for details)

Bookings can be scheduled during regular business hours, as well as evenings and weekends, depending on lab and staff availability. 

Use of the Food and Nutrition Lab by groups external to the College is subject to user fees. These fees help cover ongoing costs such as facility maintenance, lab orientations, and administration. The rate is $75 per hour (or part of an hour) with a minimum booking duration of three hours. Booking time must include setup and cleanup, with at least 30 minutes allocated for cleanup.

All individuals or groups booking either lab must:
  • Have at least one food safety-certified person.
  • Designate a supervising USask faculty or staff member responsible for the group and lab use.
  • Adhere to all operational and safety protocols, including those outlined in the Food Lab Orientation video and the  JSA/SOP handbook.
  • Complete the cleaning and safety checklist after using the facility.

Kids Camps

Every summer, the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition partners with the College of Engineering's Sci-Fi Summer Camp program to offer a food and nutrition themed camp for Grades 5-9.

Savoury Science – Cooking and Nutrition introduces kids to the fun and science behind food! Through a variety of interactive experiences, campers will:

  • Practice healthy eating habits
  • Explore where food comes from
  • Participate in hands-on food preparation
  • Conduct fun food science experiments
  • Build confidence and curiosity in the kitchen
