College Community Comes Together Through Donation Drive

Supporting Fire Evacuees - Indigenous Initiatives Committee

By Jason Belhumeur

In response to the growing needs of wildfire evacuees across Saskatchewan, the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition’s Indigenous Initiatives Committee launched a donation drive to support those impacted. This initiative followed a broader call to action by the University of Saskatchewan (USask) and mirrored efforts led by Métis Nation Saskatchewan.

In coordination with the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. (CUMFI)—the Saskatoon Métis-owned and operated non-profit organization—the college rallied its faculty, staff, and students to gather donations of essential items for families displaced by wildfires.

The donation drive ran through the first week of June, with an extension to June 10 to accommodate the overwhelming generosity of the college community. The collection point was set up in the Health Sciences Building, where community members brought in strollers, wheelchairs, new or gently used clothing for adults and children, shoes, swimsuits, toys, toiletries, as well as new colouring books, crayons, and pencil crayons.

The CUMFI team expressed deep gratitude for the donations and support, extending a heartfelt thank you to the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition community. The collected items were delivered directly to CUMFI, where they are being distributed to evacuees in need.

“Many families are arriving at shelters with only the clothes they were wearing. These donations are helping restore some comfort and dignity during a very difficult time.” said Jason Belhumeur, Communications Specialist.

The donation drive serves as a reminder of the collective impact possible when a community comes together in support of others. “Thank you to everyone who donated, helped spread the word, or supported in any way,” said Belhumeur. “Your generosity truly made a difference.”

Ongoing Support Encouraged

While physical donations are no longer being requested by official agencies, financial contributions are still urgently needed. The Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the City of Saskatoon Emergency Management Office, is coordinating relief efforts across Saskatchewan. Donations will go toward immediate and ongoing support services such as emergency accommodations, meals, and personal care.

To contribute to the 2025 Saskatchewan Wildfires Appeal, visit the Canadian Red Cross website or call 1-800-418-1111. The Government of Canada has pledged to match all donations to support disaster relief and recovery efforts in affected areas.

The College of Pharmacy and Nutrition extends its thoughts to all those impacted by the wildfires and encourages the campus community to continue finding ways to support those in need.
