Professional Development Week
The four-day summit of talks sequentially hosted by CAPSI national this year, hosted by the University of Toronto in January 2024
Professional Development Week (PDW) is an annual conference hosted by a different Canadian pharmacy school each year. This four-day conference brings pharmacy students together from across the country to network, apply their practical skills and expand their knowledge on various health care topics.
At the opening gala, Emma Fedusiak was recognized as the recipient of the CSHP-CAPSI Hospital Pharmacy Student Award which is awarded to one undergraduate pharmacy student in the country who has shown commitment to hospital pharmacy practice.
In the days after CAPSI National had several days of meetings. This year, there were five students from the University of Saskatchewan on CAPSI National. Hannah Bouvier as Saskatchewan Jr, Meagan Wenzel as Saskatchewan Sr, Jacqueline Tian-Tran as the CSHP Student Delegate, Ryan Chan as Vice President Communications, and Emma Fedusiak as National Webmaster.
During the Health Fair, Ashley Burghall presented her research poster reviewing pediatric transplant education that she had completed with Dr. H. Mansell.
That evening everyone cheered on Jessica Collins as she wowed people with her card magic talents as she competed for Canada’s Next Top Pharmacist.
The USask PharmaFacts team consisting of Lexi Pflanzer, Emily Galey, Tapanga Brooks, and Saira Imran showed off their impressive pharmacy knowledge and placed third (out of eleven schools) tying with the team from the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
We had numerous award winners at the closing gala:
Lexi Pflanzer placed 2nd nationally in the Advice for Life Competition for her presentation on anti-oppressive work and person first language in pharmacy practice.
Tapanga Brooks placed 4th nationally for the Patient Interview Competition where she counselled a patient on which of her medications were safe in pregnancy.
Meagan Wenzel accepted the Saskatchewan CFP-CAPSI Guy Genest Passion for Pharmacy Award which is given to one student as each pharmacy school has a notable passion and dedication to the profession of pharmacy.
Additionally, we want to recognize the other USask students who competed in the other competitions. Bre Morrison in the Student Literary Competition, Tapanga Brooks in the OTC competition, and Ruth Pescan, Joanne Feng, Kim Epp, and Sara Russell for the Compounding Competition.
Overall, we had 33 delegates from USask who represented our school proudly.
The USask Pharmacy student representatives on the 2023-2024 CAPSI National Council include Meagan Wenzel (CAPSI USask Senior), Hannah Bouvier (CAPSI USask Junior), Ryan Chan (Vice President, Communications), Emma Fedusiak (National Webmaster), and Jacqueline Tian-Tran (CSHP-CAPSI Student Delegate Liaison) - great representation from our college!
