The UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs), are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Achieving these Goals depends on collective action by all countries, both at home and abroad, across multiple sectors. Reflecting this principle, the 2018 Global Nutrition Report reveals that malnutrition in all of its forms (undernutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and overweight and obesity) is unacceptably high and affects every country in the world. But there is also an unprecedented opportunity to end it.

For decades, Canada has played a leading role in addressing malnutrition globally. Today, Canada can make a bigger global difference. How the country defines its course to sustainably supply ingredients and foods presents vast economic opportunities at home and large-scale food solutions for global markets. The approach can also inform how the country affirms Canada’s respected and trusted food brand to the world.

Much has been done recently to position Canada to tap its potential, including aligning key segments of the Prairies’ huge food producing and innovation capacity. The question is: how can better linking-up among stakeholders help to harness the value of these investments for large-scale social and economic impact?

On the occasion of the Canadian launch of the Global Nutrition Report 2018 and celebration of UN World Pulse Day, February 7th in Saskatoon will mark an important step in this concerted effort.
