Preceptor Requirements

Preceptors ensure that students in all stages of EL contribute meaningfully, productively, and safely to direct patient care and other professional activities at the practice site, and at a level appropriate to the student’s year of study.

We ask that all prospective preceptors review the following requirements before submitting a Preceptor Interest Form.

Qualifications

 The Preceptor affirms that they:

  • Are a graduate of an accredited pharmacy program or other relevant health care profession*. 
  • Possess a current practicing license and are in good standing with the provincial regulatory association.
  • Have actively practiced full-time for a minimum of one year.

*Where applicable, other licensed health care professionals may precept a pharmacy student. These preceptors must be in good standing with their respective regulatory authority and follow guidelines for preceptors as outlined on this page. Supervision and Support The Preceptor agrees to:
  • Review the SCPP Supervision of Pharmacy Interns Policy on a yearly basis (Link to SCPP Reference Manual. Search "supervision" to find the most up to date policy.). Out-of-province preceptors should review relevant policies/legislation in their jurisdiction.
  • Support the student in activities required to meet the objectives for the rotation.
  • Ensure adequate oversight, coordination, guidance, instruction, and assessment of each student at each stage of the practice experience, including designating another qualified professional to assume this role in their absence.
  • Provide regular and direct feedback to the student throughout the rotation.
  • Complete mandatory midpoint and final assessments of student performance in a timely manner, including reviewing and discussing the student's self-assessment(s) with the student.
  • Contact the EL Office with concerns about student performance. 
Ethical, Legal, and Professional Practice

The Preceptor agrees to:

  • Maintain and model to students an ethical, legal, and professional practice. 
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with students during and after the rotation, including refraining from any form of communication or contact with students that may compromise the professional nature of the preceptor-student relationship.
Confidentiality

The Preceptor agrees to:

  • Only request and access students’ personal information, including current or past academic performance, on a need-to-know basis that is necessary for precepting.
  • Keep students’ personal information in their possession in the strictest of confidence and only use such information for the purposes of precepting/co-precepting the placement.
  • Refrain from sharing students’ personal information with others not directly related to the provision of the placement.
