Injection Certification, Training, and Workshops

Injection Training for: Advanced Method Certification (AMC) and Advanced Method Student Certification (AMSC)

The training consists of three components:

  1. Canadian Pediatric Society’s Education Program for Immunization Course (EPIC) online course. This program provides participants with an in-depth review of the Immunization Competencies for Health Professionals. With the introduction of EPIC 4th Ed. (September 2022) there is a new module, titled "Moving to Acceptance: Strategies to address concerns about vaccines". It has a separate certificate, and both it and the EPIC course certificate must be submitted to CPDPP prior to acquire an AMC or AMSC.
  2. SK-Specific Module 16: Administration of Medication by Injection. This is an additional online module which is specific to administering drugs by advanced method in Saskatchewan.
  3. Live Injection Training Workshop: Theoretical and Practical Administration of Injections.
    • This will include:
      • A virtual presentation (one hour recorded webinar) that must be viewed prior to attending the in-person session.
      • A 2.5 hour hands-on workshop. In this interactive hands-on workshop, the participant will learn the theory, and put into practice the skills of administering subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections.

 Prerequisites:

  1. You must be a licensed pharmacist or pharmacy student in years 3 or 4 of the PharmD program at the U of S.
  2. Completion of Parts 1 and 2, and the virtual presentation portion of the workshop prior to attending the hands-on workshop.
  3. Pharmacists only: Possession of current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C with AED certificates.
  4. Hepatitis B vaccination is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended.

The training is stage two accredited by CCCEP (CCCEP Number: 1281-2021-3258-B-P, accreditation expires: August 12, 2024).

If you have taken the training elsewhere, you will be required to complete the "Saskatchewan Specific" module from USask CPE.

Upon licensure with SCPP as a pharmacist, pharmacists must attend a Live Injection Refresher Workshop through USask CPE to transition from AMSC to AMC. Pharmacists cannot administer injections after licensure until they have transitioned to AMC.

Injection Certification Requirements

Pharmacists are required to have valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C with AED certification prior to attending the live workshop. Acceptable course providers are St. John's Ambulance and Red Cross.

Pharmacists are also required to maintain valid certification to continue to inject and maintain Advanced Method Certification.

Hepatitis B Recommendation

We strongly recommend current vaccination against Hepatitis B. WHO standards state that Hepatitis B immunizations are considered valid for 20 years. If it has been longer than that, a booster is recommended, especially for health care professionals or anyone who could be exposed to blood or bodily fluids.

This module is specific to giving drugs by advanced methods in Saskatchewan. If you completed immunization and injection training from another approved provider, or in another province, you must complete this module to receive authorization to administer injections in Saskatchewan.

*If you completed the Advanced Methods Certification(AMC) training through USask CPE, you have already completed this module.

For more information on this module, and its requires, see the SK Module-16 Portion of this page.

All those wishing to provide injections in Saskatchewan must have completed injection training. If you have taken (or are taking) AMC, AMSC, or AMTC training, your live injection workshop is provided by USask CPE and is CCCEP accredited.

If you are coming from out of province, you must provide a certificate of your CCCEP accredited injection training, or register for an injection workshop.
