April Researcher of the Month

Anas El-Aneed

Bio

Dr. El-Aneed is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy. He obtained his B.Sc. (Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry) from Tishreen University, Syria, his M.Sc. (Pharmacy) and Ph.D. (Biochemistry) from Memorial University, and an MBA from the UofS. He was awarded the Governor General Gold medal for his Ph.D. thesis. He worked as a pharmacy research specialist at the Newfoundland and Labrador Center for Health Information prior to joining the College in 2008. Dr. El-Aneed’s teaching duties include Physicochemical Principles of Drugsand Analytical Mass Spectrometry.

Research

Dr. El-Aneed’s research focuses on the use of different mass spectrometry platforms for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of small organic compounds, with recent emphasis on diagnostic urine metabolites for lung patients and novel anti-cancer drugs. His team is also developing novel mass spectrometric methods to assess the cellular fate of lipid-based drug delivery systems. He is currently co-chair of the Saskatchewan Mass Spectrometry User Group. In addition to basic science, Dr. El-Aneed is engaged in applied health research, currently investigating the educational needs of community pharmacists regarding substance abuse and addiction.
